Located in Mexico City’s Colonia Juárez, the non-profit art library and community space Aeromoto provides public access to art books and small-press publications from around the world. This exhibition brings over 300 artists’ books from Aeromoto’s collection to UT Austin, focusing on editions made in Mexico and Latin America. Hammocks, plants and couches transform the VAC’s gallery into a cozy reading room open to the public.
About the Curators
Maru Calva is a book designer and editor. She has collaborated on projects with the Museo de la Ciudad de México, MUCA Roma, Museo Experimental el Eco, Cirque du Soleil, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Brazil and the Essex Gallery in London, among others. In 2013, Calva designed the publication that documents the participation of Mexico at the 55th Venice Biennale. In 2015, she co-founded Aeromoto, a public library specializing in contemporary art. She also founded Cacamotic, an office dedicated to experimentation in graphic design.
Mauricio Marcín is a researcher, curator and erratic archivist. He is currently editorial director at Ediciones MP. Between 2012-2016, he worked as curator at the Museo Experimental El Eco. In 2015, he co-founded Aeromoto, a public library specializing in contemporary art. He curated the project Las Ideas de Gamboa for the opening of Museo Jumex in Mexico City in 2013. He edited the book ARTECORREO (2011) and curated the homonymous exhibition at the Museum of the City of Mexico (2009) and the Philatelic Museum of Oaxaca (2011). Marcín was formerly curator of El Clauselito, as well as director of Celda Contemporánea.
Allison Myers is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin, specializing in postwar art and critical theory. Her dissertation investigates cross-cultural relationships between French and U.S. artists during the 1970s. She was the 2016-17 curatorial fellow at UT Austin’s Visual Arts Center. This year she is the Mellon curatorial fellow in modern and contemporary art at the Blanton Museum. She is also the founder of Breach Press, dedicated to publishing translation work in the form of bilingual letterpress books and broadsides.
