In 2018, Planet Texas 2050 commissioned artist Marie Lorenz’s Graybelt, a project in which Lorenz planned to navigate the length of the Texas Colorado River in a boat she constructed. Lorenz began the trip at the river’s source and documented stories of human reliance on the river, but the pandemic halted the trip’s completion. On the occasion of How to Grow the Cowpea: Survival Strategies from the U.S. South, Lorenz will once again set out on the Colorado River, and she invites members of the public to join her for a daylong tour of Austin’s main waterway.
The four-mile trip will begin and end at Texas River School camp. This trip spans several hours with no access to a bathroom. For the safety of everyone involved, beginner level canoeing experience is required. Canoes, paddles, life jackets, lunch, and snacks will be provided. Further instructions will be provided upon RSVP.
This program is held in partnership with the Texas River School, a nonprofit organization that transforms the Colorado River into a classroom to teach people about the preservation of surface and groundwater resources and connect them to the waterways around them.
