Screening: Bacurau
The small, fictional town of Bacurau, nestled in Brazil's semi-arid Northeast region, is thrown into disarray by a series of bizarre events: The village vanishes from GPS maps, a UFO-like drone hovers overhead, and the water truck arrives riddled with bullets. Fusing Western, sci-fi, and Tarantino-esque elements, Bacurau (2019) draws from the Brazilian region’s history of state terror, racial conflict, and popular rebellion to create a decolonial political allegory that reflects on contemporary capitalism, US imperialism, and the right of self-defense against structural injustices.
This event is organized by Maysa Martins and held in conjunction with the VAC’s current project COMMONS.
