Join artist duo Las Nietas de Nonó, the VAC’s spring 2024 artists in residence, for a screening of their film FOODTOPIA: después de todo territorio (2021). The film documents a performance in which the artists—mulowayi iyaye nonó and mapenzi chibale nonó—commit to subsisting on only hunting and gathering in and around their neighborhood, Barrio San Antón in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Filmed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pair move through abandoned buildings and streams asserting the abundance of their largely Black and working-class community, currently threatened by development and water extraction. FOODTOPIA contemplates the over-industrialization of food in the Caribbean and is an example of the duo's feminist, decolonial praxis which explores the oppression and endurance of Afro-diasporic communities and epistemologies in the Caribbean.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session.
