A Second Helping features the work of five graduating MFA students. The exhibition brings together painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and interactive digital technologies to explore themes such as rituals, personal narrative, and the in-between. While joined by these ideas, the five artists diverge with their own touch and sensibility.
Through the collaging of landscape, found imagery and the painted nude, Rowan Howe speaks to sexual performance and the continuous alteration of memory. Raised by an Armenian matriarchy and the restaurant industry, these two settings heavily influence Gabrielle Constantine's linguistic, material, and performative decisions in sculpture and installation. Sarah Chess's drawings interrogate the production of labor, repetition, and ritual in her renderings of optical illusions and pixelated imagery. Alex Freyre Cuza creates immersive virtual experiences that highlight the complexities of the current migratory circumstances of Cubans. The vibrant photographs and screenprints of Jennifer Teresa Villanueva delve into the layered experiences of her immigrant family’s daily life, labor, identity, and migration history between the United States and México.

Una segunda porción presenta el trabajo de cinco estudiantes de la Maestría en Artes Visuales. La exposición reúne pintura, dibujo, fotografía, escultura y tecnologías digitales interactivas para explorar temas como los rituales, la narrativa personal y la liminalidad. Si bien estas ideas conectan sus prácticas, les cinco artistas difieren al abordar cada obra con su propio toque y sensibilidad.
A través del collage de paisajes, imágenes encontradas y los desnudos pintados, Rowan Howe habla del performance sexual y la alteración continua de la memoria. La industria de los restaurantes y el matriarcado armenio que la vio crecer, son dos escenarios que influyen en gran medida en las decisiones lingüísticas, materiales y performativas que Gabrielle Constantine incorpora en sus esculturas e instalaciones. Los dibujos de Sarah Chess cuestionan la producción del trabajo, la repetición y el ritual a través de representaciones de ilusiones ópticas e imágenes pixeladas. Alex Freyre Cuza crea experiencias virtuales inmersivas que resaltan las complejidades de las circunstancias migratorias actuales para las personas cubanas. Las vibrantes fotografías y serigrafías de Jennifer Teresa Villanueva profundizan en la compleja cotidianidad de las experiencias familiares, el trabajo, la identidad y la historia migratoria entre los Estados Unidos y México.
