Retracing the Rubicon

How do we acknowledge the past while still moving forward? How can we create space for healing while maintaining a healthy relationship with trauma and grief? What does communal healing look like for you?
Retracing the Rubicon brings together works by ten artists who examine the power of collective catharsis and communal healing. Through painting, printmaking, photography, video, and sculpture, the artists challenge the notion that individuals are responsible for alleviating personal, collective, and historical grief. The exhibition demonstrates how processing grief collectively can be a powerful alternative to linear self-help narratives that emphasize overcoming grief independently. The featured artists aim to generate conversations about living with grief rather than moving on from it.
This exhibition is organized by Center Space Project (CSP), an undergraduate student–run arts collective that works collaboratively with the Visual Arts Center (VAC) to provide students with opportunities to participate in an interdisciplinary artistic community. Exhibitions are selected through a call for proposals each spring that is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at UT Austin, and selections are made by the CSP student committee in collaboration with VAC staff.
¿Cómo reconocemos el pasado sin dejar de avanzar? ¿Cómo creamos un espacio para curarnos mientras mantenemos una relación saludable con el trauma y el dolor? ¿Cómo se ve para ti la sanación comunitaria?
Retracing the Rubicon [Retrazando el Rubicon] reúne obras de diez artistas que examinan el poder de la catarsis colectiva y la sanación comunitaria. A través de la pintura, el grabado, la fotografía, el video y la escultura, los artistas desafían la noción de que los individuos son responsables de aliviar el dolor personal, colectivo e histórico. La exposición demuestra que procesar el duelo de manera colectiva puede ser una alternativa poderosa a las narrativas lineales de la autoayuda, que enfatizan la superación del duelo de forma independiente. Los artistas destacados buscan generar conversaciones sobre cómo vivir con el duelo en vez de dejarlo atrás.
Esta exposición es organizada por Center Space Project (CSP), un colectivo de arte dirigido por estudiantes de grado, que trabaja en colaboración con el Visual Arts Center (VAC) para proveer a estudiantes oportunidades para participar en una comunidad artística interdisciplinaria. Las exposiciones se eligen a través de una llamada para propuestas cada primavera, que está abierta a todos los estudiantes de grado y postgrado a UT Austin. Las selecciones se hacen por el comité estudiantil CSP en colaboración con el personal de VAC.
