The Visual Arts Center stands in solidarity with the Black community in Austin and across the nation. We honor the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and the many others, whose lives have been taken at the hands of police brutality and systemic racism. All Black lives matter.
We believe art has the potential to unite, inform, and inspire us to take action toward creating a more just world. Art can broaden our perspectives and be a catalyst for change. Recognizing that art institutions are not neutral spaces, we are committed to critiquing our own structural biases and adopting more equitable and inclusive practices as we move forward.
We resolve to listen, engage, and educate around matters of racial justice; to examine our institutional shortcomings and work to do better; and to amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in our community.
We are developing a set of actionable steps we can take to put these words into practice. We welcome your collaboration and feedback as we do this work.
