Juror's Distinction — Studio Art

Stephenie Andrade lives and works in her hometown of Laredo, Texas. She is receiving a BFA in Studio Art. As a resident of a border town with immigrant parents from Mexico, Andrade is immersed in thoughts about her identity and her alienation from the cultures of both sides of the border. Her work serves not only as a visualization of her thoughts, but as an opportunity to research and learn more about a land and culture that was previously unfamiliar to her. As a way to connect with her Mexican roots, Andrade creates paintings, prints, and photographs that engage with notions of the border and isolation from one’s cultural heritage. The imagery used in her work is primarily inspired by her archive of family photographs and by significant spaces in her hometown that symbolize this blending of cultures.
