Free and Open to the Public

Celebrate the opening of the VAC’s spring exhibitions Pablo Tut: Land Invention, Blackland Prairies, Transcendence: A Century of Black Queer Ecstasy, 1924–2024, and The Modern Cowboy at this free and open-to-the-public reception.

At 5:30 p.m., members of the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church Choir will perform in celebration of the exhibition Blackland Prairies, which features a portrait of the Clarksville-based church by artist Riley Holloway and incorporates the history of the church’s neighborhood as part of the exhibition’s historical framework. Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church was founded in the early 1870s by members of the Clarksville freedom community west of downtown Austin. The choir is led by Pastor Steve A. Manning and choir director Mattie R. Boykin-Robinson.

Enjoy refreshments provided by our friends at Alienated Majesty Books, KTonic Kombucha, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, St. Elmo Brewing Co., and Topo Chico.
